Current answer
The Steam Machine starts at $1,049 in the United States and released June 22, 2026. Valve sells 512 GB and 2 TB models, with optional Steam Controller bundles, using a semi-custom six-core Zen 4 CPU, RDNA 3 GPU, 16 GB DDR5 plus 8 GB GDDR6 VRAM, SteamOS 3, and microSD expansion. Current availability follows regional reservation queues; after Valve sends a purchase email, the reservation holder has 72 hours to complete checkout.

Display capability is not a guaranteed game frame rate
Valve lists up to 4K gaming with FSR 4.1 and high-resolution output limits. That does not mean every game runs at 4K/60 or 4K/240. Game settings, FSR mode, title compatibility, thermals, and drivers still determine real performance; GameTrendex has not benchmarked the system.
512 GB versus 2 TB Steam Machine
The core processor, memory, ports, and SteamOS feature set are shared; storage and price drive the decision.

How the reservation and waitlist work
The original randomization has passed; current buyers should understand the queue rather than expect instant checkout.
- 01
Confirm your regional list
Action availableNorth America, UK/EU, and Australia use separate queues; supported Asian markets use KOMODO.
- 02
Check your reservation or waitlist email
MonitoringValve says purchase emails continue through the remainder of the year in queue order.
- 03
Use the 72-hour checkout window
Action availableA confirmed reservation is cancelled if purchase is not completed within 72 hours of the email.
- 04
Do not cancel to change models
ConfirmedAfter randomization, Valve says model choice cannot be changed; cancelling releases the position.
- 05
Waitlist does not guarantee this production run
MonitoringMovement depends on cancellations; future runs follow the existing waitlist order.

Valve calls it a PC, not a locked console
Steam Machine runs SteamOS 3 for a console-like library and suspend/resume flow, but Valve explicitly allows owners to install apps or another operating system. That openness also means Windows behavior, third-party drivers, and non-Steam software may differ from the default SteamOS experience.
Source: Steam Machine official software section (opens in a new tab)Storage is the only listed model performance difference
Valve lists one CPU, GPU, and memory platform across the 512 GB and 2 TB configurations. The 2 TB model costs $300 more for four times the NVMe capacity. Both add microSD expansion, but Valve does not state that a microSD card matches internal NVMe performance.
Source: Steam Machine models and technical specifications (opens in a new tab)The Controller bundle saves $20 against separate US list prices
The Controller is $99 separately. The 512 GB and 2 TB bundles each add $79 to the Machine price, a $20 difference from buying at the separate $99 list price. That arithmetic does not account for stock, taxes, shipping, or regional prices.

Valve says Controller demand exceeded its estimate, so the Machine launch used a randomized reservation order to reduce bot and refresh-speed advantages. Accounts had to be in good standing with a Steam purchase before April 27, 2026, and signups were limited to one per household.

The official page describes the system as cool, quiet, and capable of up to 4K gaming with FSR 4.1. This guide does not convert those marketing statements into measured noise, temperature, frame-rate, or value conclusions. Per-game benchmarks and teardown evidence are separate tasks.
